Background Camera Uploads not working on Android 9.0

I have a Pixel 2 XL.  I upgraded to Android 9.0 (aka Pie) a few days ago.  Now, whenever I take a photo or video with the phone, it does not automatically upload to my Dropbox account.  Instead, I have to open the Dropbox app, and go to the Photos section.  Then it will initiate the upload.

Is this a known bug, or do I need to change a setting on my phone to re-enable this feature?

Hey there @Robert D.39 - sorry to hear this and enjoy your new Pixel 2 XL!

Can you first ensure that camera uploads is enabled?

On Android devices this can be found in the app if you tap the menu button > the gear icon > under Camera uploads, select “Turn on camera uploads". Toggle it on and off for one or two times please.


If this persists, can you include a screenshot of the camera uploads settings in the Dropbox app? To find settings on Android, tap the menu button and then scroll to “camera uploads.” 

Here are some other things you can try in the meantime as well Robert:

1. Clear the cache on your Dropbox app.  To clear your cache, please follow the steps listed below:

- Navigate to the “Account” tab
- Tap the gear icon in the upper-left corner of the screen
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen
- Select Clear Cache
 
2) Uninstall the Dropbox App
3) Sign out from the App Store
4) Restart your device
5) Sign into the App Store
6) Download and Install Dropbox
7) Try to sign into your Dropbox account. 
 
Sorry for the lenghty reply and please keep me posted on your findings!

Hi Walter,

Thank you for the response.  I tried toggling the Turn on camera uploads" as you had suggested, and oddly enough, that worked!

Camera uploads are now working correctly.  Thank you for the advise!

After upgrading my Pixel 3 XL to Android 10 on September 3rd, camera uploads no longer works.

It doesn't recognize any new pictures and just says "All done for now", which is incorrect as there are probably close to 20 new pictures ready for uploading.

I've toggled it on and off, and switched from my personal dropbox to business dropbox and back and still no new pictures upload. 

Last successful upload was literally 20 minutes before I did the Android 10 update. 

Please advise.

My problem was that the app would no longer upload photos in the background.  If I opened the app and clicked on the photos tab, then it would upload the photos.  In fact, that is still happening to me.  However, I have not experienced the problem you are describing.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with this @reidanthony.

At first, could you make sure you're using the most recent version of our mobile app found in the link below?

https://dropbox.com/mobile

Also, have you restarted the affected device at all since you saw that happening? 

Does this persist on another network or when on cellular data? 

Let me know what you find and we'll take it from there!

PS: To enable background uploading on Android:

  • Open the Dropbox app
  • Tap the menu
  • Tap Settings
  • Then under Camera uploads tap 'When to upload'
  • Check it is not set to 'Only while phone is charging'.

PS2: If you have your mobile device's 'App Optimization' set to on for our mobile app you should disable it from within your device's settings as this could be interfering with the automatic camera uploads feature as well.

Yes, I have the most recent Dropbox app installed.

Yes, I have restarted... numerous times.

And yes, I have all options selected for camera uploads...

It's set to upload all photos and videos over wifi OR cellular and background uploading as long as the battery is above 30%, with the "only while charging" option disabled. 

It's as though it doesn't recognize new pictures in my gallery. 

When I open my camera uploads, it just says "All done for now". 

I even went as far as to change my camera uploads to my business account, and set the upload "Time Frame" to "All photos"... which then immediately started uploading all 900+ photos from my phone, EXCEPT it still didn't upload any photos taken after September 3rd. 

Yet, I can go in and manually upload the pictures from that time frame, so I don't understand why it doesn't recognize the photos as new automatically.
