In order to backup my files I told Dropbox to upload everything on my hard drive. I now see a little dropbox symbol on all of my folders. Does this mean the files are no longer on my hard drive and only on Dropbox?...or are they on both?

They are on both - Dropbox is a syncing tool primarily.

It leaves everything on all devices and uploads everything. So what you do on one device replicates and changes to all others (i.e. delete a file it will delete on all others).

Note, however, that Dropbox is not primarily a backup tool - I'd strongly suggest using a proper backup tool for that

Thank you as this was most helpful. So what is done to a file on one device carriers to all devices. As a result, a separate program for backing up files is advised.  So, even at a later date, if you cancelled your Drop Box subscription, your files would still be on your local PC hard drive or separate backup provider. Backup options on Dropbox are limited to a specific number of days if you accidentally delete something...correct?
