Cannot access settings - local settings file?

Cannot access settings - local settings file?

Explorer | Level 3

Hi,

I have 2 remote PCs set up with my dropbox account.

They both have very limited space on them so I have set them with only 1 selected folder to sync.

When I add another folder in my main PC they have automatically been added tot hose PCs.

The problem is that on both of these machines, it seems that when the hard drive is very full, I cannot open the settings window from the taskbar when I remote into them (Teamviewer or Splashtop). I click on the DB icon and the icon background goes grey but no menu shows up at all meaning I cannot get to the settings.

So I am now stuck in a situation where I cannot change these settings unless I go down the route of removing that folder from my main PC and see if that relieves the PC enough.

I realise that this problem seems to be caused by a very specific set of circumstances... but I need to sort it out.

Is there a file stored somewhere in Windows that I could manually change rather than trying to access the gui?

Hi @poxyusername, thanks for posting today!

Does the issue only occur when there isn’t enough free space on your machine? What if you’re at the machine physically, does it work then?

Currently, there isn’t another method to access your Dropbox desktop application settings, only via the app itself.

Keep me posted!

Hi Jay,

Both of them have about 2.3 GB of space free on the drives and because they are quite small machines I'm not going to get it much more than that even if I uninstall the few programs I have on them.

I won't be able to tell if I can see them locally until I get them in front of me again which could be some time away.

Is the information for what files are being synced not saved to a preference file somewhere?

Thanks

Hey @poxyusername; thanks for getting back to us with additional information on this.

I'm afraid, a Dropbox folder on a computer should not be accessed from a remote location or a different profile at all so we can't help much here unless you get your hands on the devices showing this behavior that is.

Moreover, the files to be synced aren't stored in a preference file. When the desktop app is running properly, the cache folder acts like a staging area for the syncing process (uploading and downloading files).

I hope this helps to some extent and please keep us posted.
