'Checking out' document

New member | Level 2

Hi,

I've trying to find a way to 'check out' a document while I'm editing from a shared folder so nobody else can then go in and edit while I'm still working on that document. Hopefully a feature that will mean if I've 'checked it out' then another user can open a read-only file which states 'checked out by Jo Bloggs'. Is there such a thing, and if so how does it work?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, currently there isn’t any feature on Dropbox that does this for you.

However, if you’re editing a Microsoft document on the computer and not the site directly, if your colleagues open the file the same way, the Badge should appear and show that you are currently on the file and editing it.

While it won’t block them from editing the file themselves, at least they’ll be aware that someone is doing something to the file.

Hope this helps!

Any chance this feature exists now? I work on a lot of shared documents and it is frustrating having to edit the process external to Dropbox (i.e. via email and waiting for a reply....)

Hey @dhh5003, thanks for checking in with us!

If you want to lock a file to prevent others from making changes to it while you're editing it, you can check out file locking. 🔒

Give me a shout if you have any other questions. Thanks!
