Deleted Files not in Deleted Folder

Hello everyone!

I need some help from more experienced dropbox users. At work I've deleted dropbox app from my computer, wanting to clear up space, but I forgot that the account is synced. In the morning most of the files from work account got deleted. Of course, I went into a "Deleted" folder hoping to recover files, but they weren't there. There are many in a shared folder, but not all. 

If the files aren't in a deleted folder, does that mean they got permanently deleted? Is there any way to recover the ones that are not in a shared folder?

I would appreciate any advice on this!

Hi @anels, happy Thursday! 

When you uninstall the Dropbox desktop application, your Dropbox folder and files remain intact on your hard drive. 

All that happens is that they will no longer sync the changes.  

Have you checked on your computer to see what you can find there?

Hi!

A stupid question but where can I find it in my hard drive?
If I look at dropbox at local disk C:/username/dropbox, then all files are deleted there. Is there any other place they can be?
I’m worried that because the files are not in a deleted folder then I may have permanently deleted them.

Hi @anels, generally, that is the default location for the Dropbox folder.

By the deleted folder, do you mean the one on the Dropbox site?

Yes, the deleted files folder on the website! Is there any other location for it?

If you're not seeing the missing files on the deleted files page, then there's a few possibilities as to why this might be the case:
 
  • The files are on another Dropbox account
  • They were on a shared folder you don't have access to any more
  • The files were deleted outside of the 30 day period
  • The files were permanently deleted
I'd try checking the first two options to be certain they aren't the main reason the files are missing.
