Deleting when using a DropBox thumb drive backup

Explorer | Level 3

Pardon the silly question, I just want to avoid any stupidity disasters.  I'm using a thumb drive (which is on DropBox) to back up files on my "C".  Now I'm deleting from my O/Downloads folder to free up some space.  l understand that if I delete a C/Downloads... folder that is also in C/Downloads on Dropbox, it would also be deleted on DropBox.  I just want to be sure that when I erase a folder in C/Downloads..., that it won't look for Downloads and erase the same folder that's on thumb drive E/Downloads... on Dropbox.  Thank you

Hi there @RandyNovice, I hope you're having a good day so far!

If the Downloads folder within the Dropbox folder is just a copy, then deleting the original in another location shouldn't affect the copy within Dropbox.

Just to clarify, if you're using symlinks at all within the Dropbox folder to point to the C drive's Downloads folder, any deletions within the C:/Downloads folder would reflect in the Dropbox folder.

I'd just like to note though that we highly recommend not to have your Dropbox folder hosted on removable media, like a thumb drive as many issues can occur with this set up including data loss.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions - thanks!

Thanks for your time and remarks.  For clarification - DropBox is not ON the thumb drive.  The thumb drive is a USB in the computer, so just another drive that is being copied to DropBox.

Thanks for getting back to me @RandyNovice!

I appreciate you clarifying that for me, sounds like you're all good on that front then.

If there's anything else that I can help with, feel free to just give me a nudge here. I'd be more than happy to help.

I hope you have a great day!
