Does renaming files (not folders) cause them to be re-uploaded and re-downloaded?

Explorer | Level 4

Greetings,

I have a number of files in a Dropbox folder that I need to rename. This is a manual rename for each file. And in total the files are 1GB.

Does the act of renaming a file cause that file to be re-uploaded to Dropbox? And for other computers that are constantly syncing--does that act cause them to re-download the file from Dropbox?

I am renaming these files from my cell's mobile hotspot, so data usage is a concern.

I presume that Dropbox is inteligent enough to know when a file has been renamed and as such does the actual act of renaming that file instead of re-uploading and re-downloading. But with the amount of files I am dealing with over my cell's mobile hotspot I want to make sure before I proceed.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there @George A. - sorry for the tardy response and happy Monday!

It should only sync a small chunk of the file(s) in question when renaming them as this a significant aspect of the syncing process. When we first sync your files, we do it in small chunks (of the files) which will then be hashed (normally in your cache folder).

This means that changes like this (i.e. renames), even on a massive file, will only need to sync that change (that specific chunk only).

I hope this information helps and please let me know if there's anything else I can assist with. Oh, and happy Monday George!

Hi Walter,

Thanks for the quick response! So the filename is itself contained within a block of data belonging to the file and thus when performing a rename only that block gets transferred?
