Dropbox is not syncing for EC2 instance

New member | Level 2

I have installed dropbox in my ec2 instance (Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS). I used the following commands  to install Dropbox -

cd /var/www/html/dropbox
wget -O dropbox.tar.gz "http://www.dropbox.com/download/?plat=lnx.x86_64"
tar -xvzf dropbox.tar.gz
.dropbox-dist/dropboxd &

Then linked EC2 to my Dropbox account by pasing the URL in web browser.  However,  I added a folder Named "Driver" and added an excel file inside Driver. These are not syncing. I am on drobpox website and I clicked "my files". "Driver" folder is not listed.

$dropbox status
Up to date

$dropbox filestatus
.dropbox-dist: unwatched
driver: unwatched

I stopped and restarted dropbox in EC2. It did not solve the issue. Could you please help?

Thank you.

Hey @suhash, just to confirm, are you by any chance referring to an EC2 Virtual Machine?

If so, I’m afraid we cannot indicate whether this would work fully as expected as this is third party software and may have unexpected configurations. However, we do have some general recommendations that may help.

In general, for Dropbox to work correctly, it needs to be installed in an (OS) that’s not part of a Shared Session. If installing into a virtual environment, it would need to be installed into a user account that is part of this virtual desktop or virtual machine and only accessed by that user account. The Dropbox folder should also be located on the same mounted drive that is running the virtual machine or virtual desktop.

Please be aware that if you install Dropbox on a virtual machine or virtual desktop that are non-persistent, such that they are reset on a schedule or after logging off, Dropbox may be logged out and need to resync every time this occurs.

For additional recommendations, please consult resources available from the manufacturer of the third party software.

I hope this information helps to some extent.

Hi Lusil

I am using Amazon EC2 instance to connect to dropbox.

Thank you.

Thanks for confirming that for me, @suhash

In that case, please review my post above and for further info regarding this, I’d recommend contacting Amazon for additional details.

In the meantime, if you have any other questions, just give us a shout. Thanks!

You might look into rclone.  You can set up a cron job to run it as described here:
