Dropbox just installed an update and completely wiped everything!

Helpful | Level 5

I was just asked if I wanted to install a Dropbox update, so I said yes, and then it acted as if I had just installed Dropbox for the first time - it asked for my login details, and then asked which folders I wanted to sync, warning me that because I have over 500,000 files (I actually have 1.5 million files in my Dropbox, I use it for business), that I would take ages to sync. I double checked my hard drive and, thank god, all the files were still there, so I figured it will probably be ok. So I confirmed that I wanted to sync everything, and then it wiped my entire Dropbox folder and is now starting fresh.

So it's now having to sync 400GB of files from nothing. WHY?! I am in the middle of a working day here, during which I use Dropbox pretty much all the time. This has really screwed me over!

I guess there's nothing I can do now, but why the hell did this happen? And how can it be avoided in the future?!

OK, panic over. The update didn't remember where my Dropbox folder actually was. I followed the instructions here and everything is fine now: https://help.dropbox.com/installs-integrations/desktop/advanced-reinstall

I think you guys need to fix your update system so that I remembers where your Dropbox folder actually is (I have mine on a secondary drive).

Hello @LocalStarlight. I am sorry to hear about this unfortunate experience you had in the middle of your working week.  Apologies for the inconvenience this situation has caused.

Seems like the app detected you needed to update the version of Dropbox. Accepting the update should not resync all your files though. I would need to see device details to have the ability to answer that. Since you are new to our Community, please be aware that we cannot see account related information from here, for privacy reasons.

I would be glad to open an email communication with you to investigate this and provide you with an answer. We can use the address associated with your Community profile.

Thank you so much for reporting this and for all your patience.

Sooo happy to hear that the issue is resolved @LocalStarlight. Thank you for the heads up.

Please note that an update should not create a new Dropbox folder, a complete reinstall would create a new Dropbox folder in your C drive. However, I do understand you did not reinstall so I will report your feedback to the team and look for similar reports.

Hope I don't find any but I will keep you posted if I do.

Thanks again!
