Dropbox links in OneNote throw error 404 file not found

New member | Level 2

Hi all. I frequently use hyperlinks on pages in OneNote to share the automatically generated links to some of my Dropbox files for viewing with my students, e.g. PowerPoints (I'm a teacher). Often, some students get a "file not found" error. Sometimes refreshing the page works, or just clicking the link again, or copying the link and pasting it manually. Sometimes, however, the link just fails to work. Why don't these links open for all users? Is it timing out due to network latency? The links are public so no one needs to be signed into their own Dropbox account to view. This problem makes no sense to me. Can anyone help please!!!???

Hi there @novelty, thanks for checking in with us.

Out of curiosity, when users try to access the shared links, do they always get the same error message? Do you by any chance have a screenshot of it (without including any personal info in it)?

Keep me posted!

They always get the same message, but only some users get the message. I have checked their network connections and authentication, and that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Thanks for your swift reply, @novelty

Hmm.  Would it be possible to ask the users that are getting this error to try another browser instead of the one they normally use?

Could you also try sending the shared links via a different method to see if the inconsistent behavior persists?

Let me know how it goes!

A different method of sharing the file links completely defeats the purpose of sharing them via OneNote. And, yes, I have had students try different browsers. Same negative result.

You mentioned that copying and pasting works. By chance do the links wrap around to a new line for some of these people, and OneNote is breaking them as a result? You see that in emails all the time, and copying/pasting is the only way to correct it.

Even if that's not the case, it's likely still OneNote breaking the link somehow. If copying and pasting the link works, that shows that the link is valid. I'm betting when the link fails, if you look at the link in the address bar of your browser, it's incomplete.

No, that's not it. There is nothing wrong with the URL. You may have missed the word "sometimes", i.e. copying and pasting works sometimes, for unknown reasons. You may have also missed that it works for "some users" and not others. There is nothing wrong with the link, and it's not associated with one particular browser. There are different versions of OneNote, runing on both Windows and Mac platforms, but this isn't the issue either - because somethings simply clicking on the link 2 or 3 times gets it working.

Thanks for the additional info, @novelty

As @Rich also mentions, since the shared link works when manually accessed and the error comes up inconsistently through one medium, this might be due to how the shared link interacts with the platform in question.

For this reason, I'd recommend getting in touch with their Support team as they may be able to provide some additional info on this.

Let me know how it goes and I'll make sure to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks!
