Dropbox recent will not open most of the time.

Accessing recent files in Dropbox has slowed to a snails pace on one of my computers. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall?

I'd be more than happy to help, but could you please give me the following pieces of info so that I have a better understanding of what you're seeing?

  • Does this slow-down happen only when you open files from your Recents tab? 
  • Are you experiencing this when you use the desktop app, the mobile app, or the website? 
  • If you're using the desktop app, could you hover over the Dropbox icon that's next to your computer's clock and let me know what it reads? 

Any additional details would be very helpful. Thanks!

  • Does this slow-down happen only when you open files from your Recents tab?  On my bottom taskbar I have two icon to do with Dropbox.  One opens the whole folder and one I believe is the recent tab.  The folder is extremely slow and the recents often won't open at all and if it does, the files won't open from there.
  • Are you experiencing this when you use the desktop app, the mobile app, or the website?  I use Dropbox 99% from my desktop.  It works fine from my office desktop but now the one at home.  This has been happening for 3 or 4 months (I think).  There aren't any other issues with this computer.
  • If you're using the desktop app, could you hover over the Dropbox icon that's next to your computer's clock and let me know what it reads?  When I hover over the Recent tab it says 88.4.172 Dropbox up to date.

Thanks for confirming those for me, @Noni102508

Hmm.  Could you also try temporarily disabling any security or antivirus software that you have, as they may be preventing the desktop app from running correctly? 

Let me know if you see any change!

All I have is Windows Defender.  Not sure how to disable it.

Thanks for checking that out for me, @Noni102508

In this case, you can try a simple reinstall of the desktop app.

First, make sure that you save and quit all programs that access files in the Dropbox folder and stop the Dropbox desktop app from running.

To do this, click on the Dropbox icon next to your computer's clock, select your avatar, go to "Quit Dropbox" from the drop-down menu. 

Once you do that:

  1. Uninstall the desktop app.
  2. Reboot your computer to make sure the uninstall is complete.
  3. Download and install the newest version of the desktop app.
