Dropbox removed all my data! (Macbook)

Dropbox removed all my data! (Macbook)

Lyda
Explorer | Level 4

I have installed Dropbox.

My desktop is now empty. All my work is gone. 😨

I checked the Trash. Nothing.

I checked the Dropbox folder and online as well - no trace of my files.

I used "Disk Drill" software to try to undelete lost data - unsuccessfully.

I know the importance of backups now.

Need help asap...

Hi @Lyda, thanks for joining the Community.

It sounds like you enabled the automatic computer backup feature in the Dropbox desktop application. As there are missing files, try recovering them from the Dropbox site first.

Afterwards, could you disable the computer backup from Dropbox using the steps in the above article to see if this helps?

You can then move the folders and files back to their previous locations, which will also delete them from the Dropbox account online.

Keep me updated with any progress!

Thank you for a prompt reply!

Dropbox Web doesn't show my data under deleted files.

Also I lost 40GB of data and my Dropbox account capacity is only 18,25 GB.

So, there is no way my data was fully uploaded to Dropbox at any time.

What would be the next step?

If the data hasn't been uploaded to the site, could you check if there is an old Dropbox folder on your machine and locate the files through there?

No, no other Dropbox folder.

And search, as well in finder and also using recovery software doesn't find the data (by file names) on the drive.
