Dropbox says that I am offline

I use a MacBook Pro 13' 2.4 GHz running 10.15.7 - Dropbox says that I am offline, which means that I cannot access files stored online. I am, of course, online as I type this and unproblematically run other programs connected to the internet. I have restarted my computer, I have selected "no proxies" in preferences. Nothing seems to convince Dropbox that I can access my files. Already wasted a day of work.

Something on your computer or network is likely blocking Dropbox. Temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall you may be running, and launch Dropbox again. If this computer is on a work network, check with your IT staff to make sure they're not actively blocking it.
