Dropbox support says my PSD image contains malware?

New member | Level 2
New member | Level 2

I used to share a single 3.5MB Photoshop PSD file using Dropbox. This file contains a Photoshop template I created myself.

Recently Dropbox stopped sharing my files, with the message:

"Too many requests

Sorry, this link has been automatically turned off for now. Learn more about traffic limits."

It didn't seem possible this file could have too many requests (I link to it only from the description of a YouTube video of mine). Upon contacting Dropbox support, I received this unexpected e-mail.

Hi user,

Thanks for writing in. My name is dropbox_employee, and I am happy to look into this for you.

Upon investigation, it appears your account has been flagged for containing Malware. The file in question that has been flagged is:

my_own_created_photoshop_file.psd

In order for us to remove the malware ban on your account, we will need you to delete this file first. Once you have deleted the file, reply back to me and we can proceed further.

Regards,
dropbox_employee

How is it possible for a PSD file to contain malware? It's not even an executable file. It's just an image I made, even local antivirus shows up nothing.

What I suspect is that someone who doesn't like my file has tried to report it as Malware. What is the right way to deal with this abuse of the Dropbox report feature?

Asking the community, because Dropbox support is replying with canned answers only.

May it happen of the name of file? Try to:

  1. Move this file out from dropbox folder
  2. Syncs dropbox
  3. Rename PSD file for a single word
  4. Move it again to dropbox.

Sometimes extra sybols in a file name coused malware status of the file. Im not sure about your case, but you can try.

Regards,
Tomas

Hi there @salian

Although we can't pin-point exactly why you may have gotten that error message, you can check out this article for some info on this.

To further troubleshoot though, I'd recommend getting back to my colleague through the ticket you have with them due to account-specific info that may be needed.

Nonetheless, let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi @salian,

The message you have received is clear enough, I think:

...

Despite you "share" that only to "YouTube":

Did you count how many times your video(s), which include the particular template, have been seen for a day ago? There are limits in download size and (possibly) download count!

Hope this gives some direction.
