Dropbox synchronization errors after system reinstall

Dropbox synchronization errors after system reinstall

Explorer | Level 4

Recently I did a complete erase of my hard drive and reinstallation of MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra. Dropbox had been working fine before the reinstallation, but after I reinstalled it, it started deleting all of my files and giving me "conflicted copy" notes on files and folders. In my Dropbox web account, there are files that were in a folder that are now strewn all over the place.

Help! What went wrong? I need this to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @collegechurch, thanks for posting today!

Did you have a second Dropbox folder on your machine, or did you recover the previous files using Time Machine?

If so, then it's possible that the old files were detected and caused a conflict with the files on the site.

Keep me posted!

Yes, for the sake of time I did restore them from a Time Machine backup. Hmm. Not sure what to do now.

How about if I delete everthing from Dropbox online and try to sync again? Or maybe I could delete everything in the Dropbox folder on my computer and when it asks about deleting everywhere I could say Yes. Then restore everything from Time Machine again and see how that works.

What do you think sounds best?

Restoring from a Time Machine can cause these issues, since the Dropbox app doesn't know which files were changed.

The best option I can think of is the following in the same order:

  1. Unlink the Dropbox desktop application from your account
  2. Delete the conflicts from the Dropbox site
  3. Delete the local Dropbox folder
  4. Link your account to the desktop app

This will make the app download the files fresh from the site.

Let me know how it goes!

OK. I'll have to do that towards the end of the day because my Dropbox contains many mission-critical files I'll need thoughout the day.

Thanks for the advice.
