Errors on "shared link" and "shared file/folder to to other accounts"

Helpful | Level 6

To Whom It May Concern,

I have been using Dropbox to share files with my students for several years.

Yesterday, I tried to share a folder.

At first, I could create a shared link to the folder but my students could not access it.

It shows "Error (404)".

I tried the old links I have posted. They all show "Error (404)".

I tried to send files using "Transfer" (I have never done before.) It did not work as well.

It said "You’ve hit the limit of invites you can send per day. Try again in 24 hours. "

I tried to create a new small text file and share its link.

It did not work as well. It said "You don’t have permission to create a link to this file."

Then I randomly tried to share links for both file and folder. All did not work.

All said "You don’t have permission to create a link to this file."

I tried to share a folder to specific accounts. It did not work as well.

It said "You’ve hit the limit of invites you can send per day. Try again in 24 hours. "

I think it might be something with the files I tried to share.

I searched for files that might contain virus then I removed them all from Dropbox but it did not help.

My old share links still do not work.

I still get the same message "You don’t have permission to create a link to this file." when I tried to share a new link and "You’ve hit the limit of invites you can send per day. Try again in 24 hours. " when I tried to share a file/folder to specific accounts.

Please help enable share features for me and suggest what I should do to avoid it happening again.

Sincerely,

Denchai Worasawate

@Daphne @Katie  I am not sure if Katie is the person responding to my email.

This post is my error messages.

I have never seen the error message  “too many login attempts or connections.”

Does the error message  “too many login attempts or connections.” cause the sharing problem?

Somehow, it seems that the problems have been fixed now.
I can share files and folders now.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Denchai Worasawate

I've just had a parallel - though somewhat different - issue.   I've been accustomed to quickly copying a link for sharing by right-clicking on the file directly in the Dropbox folder on my computer (Mac).  But the action to copy a link to the clipboard that way seems to have disappeared.

However,  I did discover that opening the Desktop app still offered access to the shared link.   For now, anyway.....

Hey there @Denchai & @Steven N.; thanks for posting on our Community!

When it comes to your concern, Denchai, it seems like your shared links have been banned. You can read all about it and how to tackle it here, if needed.

As for the issue you described now, Steven, could you check if the app is running in your system tray/menu bar when you try to create a shared link to a file within your Dropbox folder?

If it's indeed running and syncing, could you let me know what options you get when you right (or control) click on the file(s) you'd like to generate a shared link for?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi Walter,

Thanks for the prompt reply.   Here's what was happening yesterday:

The menu bar version of the app was running, and everything looked normal. I opened my local Dropbox folder in the Finder from the app's little folder icon link, as usual.  But, on right-clicking the file I wanted to share (which was definitely fully uploaded) the 'Copy Dropbox Link' did not appear in the list of options presented. I then used the desktop app to copy the link instead.

But, thinking back, I suspect  _none_ of the Dropbox options appeared on right-clicking the file.  I was only looking for the familiar 'Copy Dropbox Link' item, so could easily have missed that.

If that's correct, it suggests the overall 'connection' between the Finder and the menu bar app had mysteriously broken, rather than just a single feature disappearing, as reported earlier.

And, on rebooting today (auto-launching the menu bar app as usual), all the expected 'right click' options are there again.

Hope this is helpful.

@Walter It has been more than 24 hours since I noticed the error message.

I still have the same error message.

I have followed instruction from https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-files-folders/Why-am-I-getting-a-User-is-Banned-message-when.... Suggested by @Lusil

My ticket number is Ticket #11450750: DB: Errors "shared link", "shared file/folder to ...".

Please suggest me what I should do to enable the share features.

Sincerely,

Denchai Worasawate
