Files deleted for team, after windows re-install

New member | Level 2

I had to re-install windows yesterday, and after doing so had copied my saved local dropbox files into the new directory created. However this morning my boss calls and says ALL of dropbox was deleted. Even folders I never had synced. The web portal all say deleted by me at XXX time etc. I then re-synced my drop box and the ~80GB of files I had all re-appeared along with some files that were in the never synced folders.

We have run the recovery since and are slowly getting our files back, but we NEED to know why this happened?????

I'm not sure what other information would be helpful but see below:

Win10 Pro 1903

Dropbox V74.4.115

Selective sync

Cause:

Not unlinking DropBox before windows 1903 corrupted, formatting the drive registered it as a "blank" master copy, proceeded to remove all files.

Recovered from web portal.

Hey @Arcau, I understand that losing important content isn’t an ideal scenario however I’m glad to hear that you’ve managed to restore your files now, so I’d happily take it from where you’ve left off. As it looks like you’d merely like to prevent that from happening again in the future, I’d suggest having a look at AgentJay’s thorough article here, which breaks down the various ways your files are susceptible to deletion(-s).

Now because you mentioned that the deletions occurred on the formatted device, I’m wondering if you didn’t unlink your account before proceeding with the system reset & erased files were synced to our website & across accounts. Kindly note that if the drive is ever disconnected from the computer while Dropbox is running there is a small chance that the Dropbox software will start deleting files before realizing that the entire drive has been removed.

Nonetheless, these are mere pointers, as Dropbox would sync any changes it sees to the website. I hope that this helps to a certain extent & please let me know here if you need further assistance in any way!

Oh, I see now @Arcau; glad to hear that you’ve now been able to determine the root cause of the deletions & thanks a lot for circling back to us to keep the thread updated on progress.

While you’ve been able to get this squared away on your end this time, I’m always around, so feel free to ping me back again in case you have more questions or thoughts in the future. Thanks for choosing Dropbox & take care until we talk again!
