Hidden "Download" buttons on Dropbox. What an Irony!

Hidden "Download" buttons on Dropbox. What an Irony!

New member | Level 2

We've been using Dropbox for file sharing many years. It was a beautiful platform as it was simple and easy to work with. While the speed of upload and download improved throughout these years, one thing is degraded significantly and that's UI.  User friendliness is sacrificed to introduce some extra things that are absolutely secondary for most users in my opinion.

As you can see in the screenshot here : [External link removed to allign with our Community guidelines]

The download button is hidden in a tiny menu. I have a big question, WHY????

What is the logic behind this? We upload files on Dropbox and share a link with the receiver to go and download. Yes, they can watch it or do some other things with it but the main purpose is to download. Why such an important button is hidden everywhere on this site?

Hope someone from your UI design team will see this and use some logic to re-design this.

Thanks!

Another screenshot showing "Download" is hidden in open menu : [External link removed to allign with our Community guidelines]

While the "Share" button which is absolutely useless in this case is highlighted and available. The above link was generated to be shared with our client to download a file. Why does the person receiving link need to "Share" it again? What is the logic behind this?

If your sole purpose is to provide share links for download, you can alter the link so that a download is forced.

Bring back the Download button when viewing a file on web

New member | Level 2

Over time, Dropbox has deprioritized the "Download" button when viewing a file on web, to the point that it's almost impossible to find. Currently a user has to go to the bottom of the right sidebar and click the 3 dots icon (signifying "more options") and open a tiny submenu to Download. There are literally 14 other operations that have been prioritized higher in the interface than this far more common operation — I counted. There is no indication whatsoever in the main wrapper that downloading a file is even an option.

This idea is to add Download back to the main wrapper of the UI, like this:
