How can I make sure that the files sync down from the website and overwrite files on an old laptop?

New member | Level 2

Hello, I have several laptops and my most recent laptop (MacBook) is using Dropbox just fine and all my files are upt do date, etc..  I need to get an old laptop going again (Surface Pro), but I need the files online to remain "as is".  In other words, I do not want the files from the old laptop to overwrite the files online. How do I make sure of this?

Hi @tamculler, thanks for reaching out to us here!

For the older device, if you have an old Dropbox folder there I would suggest the following:

  1. Make sure the old device is unlinked from your account online here.
  2. Delete the old Dropbox folder on the old device.
  3. Sign back into the app, or reinstall the app if it was uninstalled.

This will create a new Dropbox folder and ensure that the files from your account online aren't overwritten by the files in the old local Dropbox folder.

Let me know if this helps!
