hiIs there a way to preserve or archive a large folder to be able to verify no changes were made to documents?
Here's the context. A company is being acquired. We'd like to be able to preserve the company Dropbox status to refer back to in the future in the event of any disputes. The folder is operational and in use so I need to somehow create an online or offline snapshot or copy.
Would consider commercial products or services that could address this.
Hey there @eubulides - happy July!
If you'd like to keep the folder operational at this point, I'd suggest first creating a copy of the folder and work on that one from now on, and then, use selective sync to unsync the original folder on any device(s) that you don't want it to be visible on.
I hope I'm not missing something here and please keep me posted on your progress!
If you don't need it to be syncing and keep its sharing properties, as I initially thought, you'll just need to copy or move the files from the said folder into a newly created folder that you'll later on remove by having it selectively unsynced from your linked devices. As you'll need it for archival purposes and not to be tampered with (modified as you put it), I'd suggest naming it to something that reflects its purpose.
Let me know if I've misunderstood anything please.
While there isn't a direct way to mark a folder as read-only, I'd suggest managing the access to the said folder according to your needs (probably archive it via your account's Team Folder manager) @eubulides.
If it's a Team Folder, please take a look at the following Help Center:
Specifically, make sure to review the part that relates to Archiving a team folder as I think this will be the best approach to achieve the task at hand.
If this is a shared folder instead, please have a look here:
I hope this is - even slightly - helpful and I remain at your disposal should you have anything more to ask or add.
Yes, exactly @eubulides!
Just keep in mind that this will be a static copy (something like a snapshot) of your data at the point in time you choose to do it.
Let me know if you need anything else!
