How do I repoint dropbox at Dropbox (old)?

Helpful | Level 5

Yesterday, my computer had a meltdown and I had to do a factory reset. Today, I re-installed the Dropbox app.

But - when I look at my dropbox files they are 13 months out of date.

But - I ran a file search across my computer, and found the missing files in a folder called "Dropbox (old)".

It seems that my reinstalled Dropbox is just confused about where my most recent files are.  How do I repoint the app and website so that Dropbox (old) is the real-dropbox?

Thanks in advance

Kim

Hi Jay

You're right.  I did have two Dropbox accounts.  I can't remember creating two, but I entered my 2nd email address, pushed Forgot Password, and there it was.

This is what I've done to get Dropbox to point at Dropbox (Old)

1) Make a backup copy of Dropbox (Old) - just in case everything went wrong.  It didn't, but...

2) Exit the Dropbox app on my computer

3) Rename the Dropbox folder to something else

4) Rename the Dropbox (Old) folder to "Dropbox"

5) Restart the Dropbox app on my computer

What I've ended up with is a merge between the "Dropbox" and "Dropbox (Old)" folders.  This had a few file conflicts in it, where Dropbox found different versions of files with the same name, but Dropbox seems to have handled these nicely and automatically kept both.

So - at the moment it looks like everything is back to being good again.

Thanks for your help!

Kim

Hi @KimDW, thanks for posting today!

It sounds like you have two Dropbox accounts, one which had the files in the Dropbox (Old) folder, and this ‘new’ account you logged into with files 13 months old.

I'd like you to check the email and also look carefully for typos in any of these places:

  1. On your computer, click on the small Dropbox icon in your menu bar or system tray. Click on the ellipsis in the Notifications panel. Click on Preferences, then click on Account.
  2. On iOS, open your Dropbox app and tap on 'Account'. On Android, open your Dropbox app, tap on the Menu button, and then tap on 'Settings'.
  3. On the Dropbox website, click on your avatar or the face in the top right corner, then click Settings.

Let me know how it goes!
