How to backup an external hard drive to Dropbox?

New member | Level 2
New member | Level 2

Hi!

I'm working on a school project, and all the files are in an external drive, about 300GB (I'm a mac user). I registered to Dropbox, moved the dropbox folder to my external drive, and moved all the files into the Dropbox folder.

Syncing and things how Dropbox work seemed bit weird... so I searched few things at this community, and got a few questions.

1. Is it true that Dropbox is never a BACKUP service?

2. I turn off Dropbox for most of time, and when I'd like to 'backup' the external drive, I plug in the drive, turn on Dropbox service, and wait it to automatically sync. But I don't think it's always synced 'right'. Is this whole process just bit of an error?

3. Is there any 3rd party service to use Dropbox as a real backup service?

 Thank you!

Hey leesipsa, I’d happily address your inquiries & we’ll take it from there; thanks for posting us your question on our Community!

While using Dropbox for backup purposes isn’t its primary function, we are aware that some users may have chosen to use the extra Dropbox space for that purpose & Jay has created this resource, in order to advise on how you could do so safely.

When it comes to your second query, since you mentioned that you decided to move your Dropbox folder, please keep in mind that it would be best for you to choose a location on the same hard drive as your operating system, as Dropbox won't work correctly if the Dropbox folder becomes inaccessible, which can happen if it's located on....

Last but not least, please note that I can’t recommend any third-party backup applications, though you may quickly search our Community & see some previous suggestions by other users (& SUs).

Hopefully my suggestions will help you clarify matters a bit & please do keep me updated on this discussion on how my advice works for you. Thanks again for reaching out to us on our Community & I hope you have a wonderful Monday ahead!

Moving Files from External Hard Drive to DropBox

New member | Level 2

I have an exernal hard drive that I need to move to dropbox for storage. The file structure is as such:

Parent Folder:Songs

Sub Folder:Artist

2nd sub folder:Song Title

When I attempted this before, Dropbox copied the structure of the parent folder but not the sub folders - they are all blank.

Its basically only allowing me to copy the files if I open the subfolders and choose the files in that.

How do I upload the entire drive keeping it's exisiting structure? There are thousands of files/folders. No way to do this file by file without it taking days.

Hey @BfloGirl, thanks for reaching out to us here!

So I can fully understand the situation here, can you let me know exactly how you tried to upload the content to Dropbox?

Was this via the website or the desktop app? If it was via the desktop app, what actions did you take to move the files to the Dropbox folder?

Let me know and we can go from there!
