I have some troubles working on a Word file. Can you help?

Explorer | Level 3

Hi,

I've build a form by Word. I moved that document to DropBox however the "form" doesn't work there.
Even Word online doesn't work.

So is there a way to use my form within DropBox?

If you use the desktop application and work within your Dropbox folder, the file should sync as is @ron49

As per your last query, I'd suggest posting your feature request for previewing support for .dotx files on our website, on the relevant section of our Community  in the link below so other similar-minded users can show their interest by upvoting it:

Hi @ron49 - welcome to our Community!

When you say the form doesn't work, can you elaborate please? Is it giving you an error? If so, could you forward me a screenshot so I can get a visual too?

On a side note, what exact type is the file (form) in question?

Let me know what you find and we'll take it from there!

Hi Walter, You are fast I've created the form as a template (.dotx) And later on saved as a .docx. As I start Word all works well, after moving the .docx to DropBox "nothing" of my setup worksDropBox-Word.PNGDotx.PNG

Thanks for your speedy reply as well Ron!

Can you please clarify what you mean by 'setup'?

Also, by what I gather, you must be using our website to access and work on the mentioned file and not our desktop app. Could you try another web-browser other than the one you originally used and let me know if you see any changes?

Thanks!

Walter,

I've created a template with "fixed" fields and variable fields. I've "blocked" the fixed fields and "setup" the wanted lay-out and saved this as ".dotx file"

After that I open the .dotx file in Word and it works nice, saving as a .docx file and uploading to DropBox goes nice as well, however after opening within Dropbox I can change everything, that was not my intention.

More persons should be able to fill out that specific form within DropBox. I don't work with an App, I work on my laptop, with the Google browser

Thanks for the additional details Ron!

I'll have to admit, it's still unlcear to me; can you clarify the following?

What's the exact matter here? Are you getting any specific errors you could share perhaps so I can have a better look?

Walter,

The purpose of my "template” is that its lay-out and several "fixed “texts not may be changed. There is some variable text to fill  in or to pick some predefined options.

In Word itself works perfect.

Moving the template to DropBox as a .dotx file, DropBox can’t handle with that format.

So, then I've moved a .docx file to DropBox but then one can change anything (Lay-out, texts, options....) that shouldn’t be the intention.

So you're locking this file through Microsoft Word and when you copy or move the file in question, it isn't locked as you'd expect Ron; am I on the right track?

Also, can you clarify what you mean by the following?

If you're referring to previewing the file on our website, it's normal as a.dotx files isn't a filetype we support for previewing at the moment.

If you're referring to something else though, please let me know and I'll be happy to look into it.

Thanks again for your patience and cooperation!

Walter, About: Moving the template to DropBox as a .dotx file, DropBox can’t handle with that format. As you stated: ..... it's normal as a.dotx files isn't a file type we support for previewing at the moment. So, it is not able to have the benefits of a once created template within DropBox. Could this be marked as a "wanted option"? Thank you for your patience Ron
