I'm finding it hard to search for deleted files in my account online. What can I do?

Helpful | Level 5

What is going on with search on the dropbox website? There seems to be almost no control. I have a huge number of files, sometimes with the same filename occuring in more than one dropbox folder and sometimes a file will only exist as a deleted file on dropbox (i.e. not on my PC). If I search for "foo.bar" then I expect to see only files called foo.bar but instead dropbox takes it upon itself to display all sorts of other files too... and what if I want to search for "*.exe"... again I get to see all sorts of files which do not end with ".exe". This seems so fundamental... am I missing something?

Now you might say why not just search directly on my PC... but actually I was interested particularly in deleted files... so not on my PC at all. So I can only serach on the dropbox website - and the deleted files always appear at the end of the list of files dropbox decides to show me... so when dropbox shows me loads of files which are nothing to do with my search request, I have to scroll down for ages to get to the bottom of the list.

Hey @M R.16, welcome to the Dropbox Community!

I’ve had a similar discussion here where I included a few tips detailing how you could go about limiting your Search results using Filters. Would you mind checking my suggestions there when you have a minute?

Additionally, I'm wondering if checking on your Events page helps you locate the info you've been looking for, since you can monitor file additions/deletions/edits in shared folders in a Timeline view there.

Please let me know how my advice works for you & we'll go from there. Thanks!

Sadly the thread did not contain an answer. Dropbox needs to improve its search capabilities.

Hi @Jane,

The @M R.16's querry shouldn't be a big transformation in the web interface. The feature exists actually, but seems not used through web. Dropbox API files search allow "options" parameter, together with "query". The "options" parameter is optional and if skipped in usage, parameter's field "file_status" value is assumed to be "active" (i.e. no deleted). The other possible value for same field, currently, is "deleted". The "options" parameter isn't used in any way yet!

Shouldn't be so hard a checkbox or switch be added around search filed in the page and "options.file_status" be set accordingly. No any change is needed for underlying functionality (only foreground views 'tuning'). If some changes will be need they would be negligible.

Hope this gives an idea how issue could be solved.
