I'm having trouble transferring a file to a friend

Helpful | Level 5

I want to transfer a file in my Dropbox folder to a a friend but the explanation and instructions for doing so don't seem to make sense. "3. Hover over the file or folder you’d like to share. 4. Click Share." But nothing happens when I hover over the file and I can’t find any other way of getting to the Share option. I have a Mac (OS 10.11.6) with Safari and I have the free Dropbox membership. I tried creating a transfer with a target email address (my wife’s as a test run) but while the file is ‘active’ there’s been no email to my wife’s address (about 30 mins later). Can anyone help, please?

Hello Lusil,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I was trying to send a shared file to someone. Nothing happens when I hover over the file's name. If I highlight it I get the option to choose Mail, Vimeo and and various other apps. If I click on Mail I just get a new message up with the file attached (and a note in red that it's too big!). The other options are no use to me; I don't do any social media. The only screenshot I've been able to take is:Dropbox window.jpg

I wonder if this is because I have quite an old iMac, running El Capitan, OS10.1.6 and that the Dropbox version I'm running, apparently the latest available, is in fact a few years old.

Incidentally, I have now worked out how to send files by Dropbox transfer, so the problem is effectively solved. I have to say that I found the Dropbox instructions and orders very confusing, but again this may be because I've got an old version.

Thanks again, and best wishes,

Alex (in UK)

Hi there @A McM, thanks for posting your question on the Dropbox Community.

From what I understand, you're trying to send a shared file to someone, is that right?

If so, when you hover over the file you want to share via the website, you should be able to see the Share button appear on its right.

If you don't, could you send me a screenshot (without any personal info) of what you do see?

Let me know of any updates, thanks!
