I'm out of space because someone shared a huge folder with me. Unsharing didn't fix.

Explorer | Level 4

I have a basic plan.  I've got a number of folders in it but still had a fair amount of free space.  Then (almost a week ago) a friend shared a 78GB folder with me.  When I went to Dropbox I saw red flags everywhere - Dropbox is full.  I saw the issue and immediately unshared the file.  It doesn't appear anywhere in my files anymore.  I went through my other folders and deleted a bunch of other old files.  I should have half my space available now, but the indicator still said I was still using 79GB of 5.5GB. I was hoping after a day or two the program would re-scan and reset.  No dice.  I restarted my machine(s).  No change.

Two days later I got an email saying sync was turned off since I was out of space.  I cleared the cache on my iPad but can't find where it is on my desktop where I mostly use Dropbox.  I looked online and whatever path all the sites say to use  to clear the cache doesn't exist on my PC.

What can I do to either get rid of that hidden folder or get my machine to re-calculate actual storage?  Help?

Thanks for the update @jh80!

That is rather strange indeed, the change in available space should reflect in your account immediately.

Just to cover all out bases here, can you just have a look at your top level folders in your Dropbox account and check the size of the folders with these steps? I'm wondering if you perhaps have another copy of the folder somewhere within your account.

Let me know what you find!

Hi @jh80, I'd be more than happy to help look into this with you.

I'll just need a bit more info so as to have a better understanding of your concern. For example:

  • Did you follow these steps to removing the shared folder from your account?
  • Do you see the folder in your Sharing tab
  • Could you also send me a screenshot (without any personal info) of your Plan tab showing your accounts occupied and available storage?

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Yes, I removed my access from the shared file, and it doesn't, nor the folder it came in, appear in my shared folders tab anymore.

Thank you for your help!

Aha!  Someone else in a shared folder had downloaded that 78GB file and put it in a buried folder.  By calculating the sizes of the folders I found it!  And deleted it.  And composed a kind-but-stern response to the person that did that ...

All is well again.

Thank you for your help!
