To anyone experiencing this - none of the "help" articles helped. I am EXTREMELY lucky that I have a daily backup of my PC. After freaking out I remembered that and although I lost all files from yesterday I was able to restore to the point DropBox hijacked the files. I've read some horrible, snarky responses from DB support in response to requests for help from others on the boards. Yes, I do understand that I didn't understand/read properly/comprehend before I "allowed" the program to yank all my files BUT as it seems I am definitely not alone in this happening, I think the onus is on the company to make their messaging more clear and to be sure users understand the implications of what they are doing. Will absolutely never recommend DB to ANYONE.
