Could you share a screenshot of that so I can have a better understanding of the matter at hand maybe @Andzayn

Looks like a glitch occured when my admin added me as a team member BEFORE I actually had the Dropbox account, caused this error. Something worth looking into, maybe blocking people from being added to folders within organizations before their accounts have been made?

Hi @Jane,

No symlinks go outside of Dropbox, as far as I am aware. There are hundreds of thousands used within Dropbox (thank you Composer and NPM/Yarn...).

glennbullion's steps are not just related to Team accounts, because you can do the same things on Professional: tell Dropbox to start with files as Local rather than Online-only through Preferences, as well as highlight all files in Dropbox and tell them to be Local via right-click menu.

My problem seems to be time-related. The files that reverted to Online-only hadn't been used in a couple months (at least on my machine). But when you have a project suddenly need attention, having to wait for files that were Local, but not any longer, is a non-starter.

I haven't seen that happen again in the past @Andzayn - could you elaborate on this and provide some screenshots to get a visual of it as well?

In addition, as this would probably need a further investigation, I would advise you to have your team's Admin contact us for further -account specific- assistance. If that doesn't work for you, let me know if I can reach out to you directly to the email you use for your Forum's profile and we'll take it from there.

Thanks in advance.

I appreciate all the time you devoted in getting back in touch with me on this discussion to let me know of the details surrounding the case @kmdweb. Now I have a very good understanding of the situation & I’ll do my best to follow-up with you a bit more closely.

For starters, let me clarify my previous reply a bit, as it’s my understanding that there could be a slight misunderstanding. By saying that:

glennbullion's steps are specific to team members

I merely meant that team members have the opportunity to revert any setting previously applied by their admin on their Sync  tab. You’re absolutely right though, since- while you can’t overwrite-you can still set your default syncing settings for your account there (Local / Online-only ☁️ ).

Following, please note that I intended to point you towards the steps I had posted on the previous page, which could be useful if you wanted to opt out of Smart sync- even temporarily- which would force your content to become locally available.

As you’ve mentioned that you’re using Symlinks though, please note that you’ll have to remove them to improve the performance of the Dropbox desktop app, as this type of setup is known to interfere with syncing. (For reference, you may keep in mind that there has also been a previous discussion on how NPM/Yarn could be interacting with Dropbox here. )

In any event, please do let me know how my suggestions work for you & if you may need further assistance to remove Symlinks from your device & I’ll make sure to reach out to you on my end, in order to move forward on the matter together. Thanks again & I'll be awaiting your next update on this discussion!

This only works for a while, the problem is any new files after you do this get synched AGAIN online only, you have to constantly be over and over doing this process to make sure all files are synched properly

I cannot remove this from my entire team because some of my team DO NEED this badly, their anoyingly restricted macs (128/256) can barely hold any data, removing this would not be an option, but on our company server and my and other powerusers laptops/desktops we would.

Please enable COMPLETE TURN OFF OF SMART SYNC: PER DEVICE or at least PER ACCOUNT, not just all or nothing on the account.

its been months and its getting really anoying, nothing more lovely than having our company application crash because one of our users just clicked on it thiking it was synched and seeing "Smart Sync Download, there was a problem downloading files, unable to connect to dropbox" and then having our software half open anyway opening some files but not others causing an error, crash and corrupting the database permanently, causing us have to stop all company operations and restore from dropbox backups or manually finding which files got corrupted and restoring them using the "previous versions" option.

It is getting ridiculous, and essentially breaking the entire dropbox system

Its been months, please fix this or let us disable it, but do something

Hey @XionicFire, sorry to hear about any frustration caused, let me follow-up in a bit more detail & we’ll take it from there!

This only works for a while, the problem is any new files after you do this get synched AGAIN online only, you have to constantly be over and over doing this process

Please note that newly added content should be hashed in the background before set to Online-only, though I’m wondering if you’re currently seeing something different. Can you elaborate a bit on the behavior, as well as the steps you're following?

Please enable COMPLETE TURN OFF OF SMART SYNC: PER DEVICE or at least PER ACCOUNT, not just all or nothing on the account.

I think it would be worth rephrasing my previous post, as you can indeed set your files to become locally available & then slowly remove them by applying Selective sync on a per-device level. Alternatively, you could turn off your Dropbox system extensions on your account online. Have you checked these options?

nothing more lovely than having our company application crash because one of our users just clicked on it thiking it was synched and seeing "Smart Sync Download, there was a problem downloading files, unable to connect to dropbox" and then having our software half open anyway opening some files but not others causing an error

What you're describing here sounds unexpected & I would suspect that something in your setup could've interfered with your options. Are you using Symlinks by any chance (i.e. I’m mentioning that as a possible cause of this discrepancy, since you’ve mentioned that some folder settings are changing without your input).

Please do let me know of your account setup & findings, in order to further advise you on your best next steps. Thanks again!

I hate Smart Sync.  Somehow it got turned on, and basically kidnapped all my files off my computer.  I have turned it off in settings, but now I've been told that I have to also turn it off manually on all of my files.  Every last one ... manually.

I really don't appreciate this.  Dropbox has dropped the ball here.

Hey @Ricky M.1, sorry to hear that your feeling this way & I appreciate the time you devoted to drop us a line here detailing your thoughts. I’ve made sure to make our product specialists aware of your concerns, as we're always looking for ways to improve.

Now Ricky, I’m wondering whether you’re on a team account or an individual one, as either your team admin could’ve enabled Smart Sync for your team or it could’ve been enabled automatically if you’re on a Professional account. Regardless, did you by any chance have a look at the steps I had included on the previous page on this thread, in order to opt out of system extensions?

Please do let me know here & I'll try to check back with you asap; I'm always at your disposal should you have any additional questions or you'd like to discuss that in a bit more depth!

I agree. This "smart-sync" should be called [profanity removed by moderation]-sync. What [profanity removed by moderation] thought it would be a good idea to download files "as they're opened" on the desktop app? This has immensely slowed down my work progress and I'm looking into another cloud option. I loved Dropbox before this and don't have time for their inefficiencies. Great user experience gone down the drain. Thanks for nothing Dropbox.
