Is there any way to get information on who posted a comment?

New member | Level 2

My situation:

My math teacher uses a dropbox file to aggregate all notes and homework for the class. Recently, someone commented some hateful speech directed towards the teacher, but there is seemingly no way of knowing who did it with the current Dropbox comment system (the commenter used a throwaway name).

I was wondering if it is at all possible to see the email associated with the comment, or just any additional information associated with the account. I noticed there is a comment activity key buried in the HTML for the post, so maybe there is a log out there? Can any information even be released without legal action?

I'm racking my brains here, any ideas?

I'm not sure this would work at this point @phoenix2u

Your best bet would be to go through the mailing list your teacher used in the first place to try and find the possible culprit as the piece of information is sadly not stored anywhere to be recovered from.

Let me know if there's anything else I can assist with.

Hey there @phoenix2u, sorry to hear about this.

Can you clarify if this was a file shared through a link or a shared folder to begin with?

Is the comment still acitve by the way?

Any additional information will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey @Walter, thanks for the quick reply.

The file is shared through a link, and unfortunately my teacher has since disabled comments on the file, although I'm sure he can re-enable them if need be.

By disabling the comments did my teacher erase all traces of the comment?

Thanks again.
