JPEG files appearing as a “ufo” after synch

JPEG files appearing as a “ufo” after synch

I recently started editing photos on a Mac from PC but now whenever I synch them to Dropbox, instead of appearing as regular photo jpeg files, they become a ufo Dropbox image that simply says “data” underneath when I click it. No image appears even though they were uploaded as standard jpeg files. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello there @Dmjphotos29 - thanks for using Dropbox and welcome to the Community!

Could you please let me know how you uploaded the files in the first place?

Also, are you able to preview them normally on our website?

Any additional information is more than welcome!

I uploaded them from a Mac. Via the web browser. I also tried the Dropbox app on my computer and neither worked. They don’t preview normally no matter how I try to view them. I have never had this issue before.

In that case, could you send us a screenshot of what it looks like on your end @Dmjphotos29?

Hey @Dmjphotos29, sorry to jump in here!

Do you know if the photos were okay, before you uploaded them to Dropbox?

The ._ characters at the front of each name, indicate that these are "AppleDouble files" (you can find out more about that, by searching online).

Do you perhaps have the Dropbox folder stored on an external drive and you copied the photos over to that?

Yes. They were okay as far as I know when I uploaded them. They transferred fine to my google drive. Hmmm I’m not sure about the hard drive but my gf did have her external hard drive plugged in at the time.

I unhooked the external hard drive. The drop box is set up on the main hard drive but it’s still doing it

Can you check if the files have a previous version you can restore?

It's also highly unlikely that this happened, if the photos were uploaded through our website.

Did you perhaps copy them over from their original location on the Mac computer to the local Dropbox folder?

I saved them to the desktop of the Mac and then transferred them via file upload through the webpage. I also downloaded the Dropbox app and synced them. Still does the same thing
