Method to bulk copy synced Dropbox files to an online only Dropbox folder

Explorer | Level 3

I am looking for a way to take a snapshot of files and folders already synced on dropbox and copy them to a different dropbox folder as an online only archive.

I understand dropbox gives me 30 day history, but I want to take and save periodic archives to help protect against files inadvertently deleted or changed and not discovered/retrieved within the 30 days.

Different approaches I have tried have all resulted in local copies of the file/folders being created on my PC as well, even though the target folder is online only.

Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

Hello @rgrichar. Happy Friday!

I understand you need a copy of the files you have locally in the folder, that will only show up online and not on your local Dropbox folder. Smart Sync might not be the right option, because with Smart Sync shows the "Online only" files on your desktop Dropbox folder.

Step 1.

Copy the files to a folder locally or on the website in smaller batches and move them to the new folder. Keep in mind if you do it on your computer, you will need to have this copy on your hard drive before it is synced as online only, so you need to have enough space to do so.

Step 2.

I suggest to use selective sync. Selective sync will completely remove this folder from your local view.

Let me know if this was helpful.

Cheers!

As this is many thousand files and folders, I want to avoid uploading or creating extra local copies if possible.

Worst case I could copy them locally to a new folder, let the folder sync and then make that new folder online only and possibly remove it from selective sync as well so it's not visible locally.  But this forces me to double the local storage use during the process and also upload all these files which are already available/synced in dropbox.

I have tried copying from dropbox to a new dropbox folder, but it always defaults to making a local copy as well, even if the new folder is tagged as online only.

I am afraid this is the only way this can be done. Move all files to a folder and then use syncing settings to remove the directory from your local folder.

I know this will take some time to sync but I am here for your feedback or questions.

Cheers!
