Moving to dropbox

Moving to dropbox

Explorer | Level 3

I am going to be migrating a large amount of files from my old shared folder to Dropbox but I am concerned about the filename rules.

Could anyone tell me if I sync files with symbols like ?|<> on Mac if they will sync properly on windows machines?

Also the length limit of file names seems to be 255, but does that include the path? or just the file itself?

This would be for a Bussiness Professional account.

Thanks so much for any help.

Hi @melbatoast, thanks for posting on the Community!

Files or folders with incompatible symbols will simply not sync on Windows as the OS itself cannot read those files, so it isn't related to Dropbox as such. You'd need to rename these items on the site or in Finder to remove or change symbols, so that they would then sync to that Windows machine.

Regarding the file path, it is the entire path including the file extension, so for example C:\Files\test.txt would be 17 characters long. If your folder paths are short enough, then you might need to consider reducing the name of the files themselves if this could

Hope this helps to clarify matters!
