My files on Desktop mostly disappeared after new reinstall's auto-syncing

Explorer | Level 3

My computer at work ( running on Windows 8 ) recently had experienced the dropbox crash issue.

I had tried many reinstall. It worked fine for that day, the crash happened again within hours or 2 days max after reinstall.

Then, I gave it a try to remove the 2 items in regedit for a new fresh reinstall. After that, the new dropbox somehow synced my desktop files. As I had a lot of files in the desktop and not much time to wait for the sync, I stopped the sync process. The next day I started to realize that most files on my Desktop were gone now. The crashing happened again.

It's a big nightmare now. Dropbox somehow messed up my files.  Those hundreds of product photos, which took me many hours of editing work, are gone now.

Dropboxer

Hello @dvillangelo, thanks for reaching out to us and sorry to hear about your frustration.

At first, it sounds like you have the computer backup feature enabled when you run the desktop app, which added computer folders, such as the Downloads, Desktop, and Documents folders into your Dropbox folder.

Despite the desktop app not running on your computer, you should be able to locate the files in your Dropbox folder and the website.

If you can't find them, make sure to check the events page, deleted files tab, and your Recycling Bin for any additional info.

As for the desktop app, could you confirm that you have the latest stable version installed (100.4.409)?

Could you also try temporarily disabling/closing any third party apps, like security software and antivirus, that could be hindering the startup process?

Let me know how it goes, thanks!
