Then perhaps a clean, advanced re-install is needed @Charles E.3!

That being said, as I'd like to have a better look into this, would it be OK if I reached out to your Dropbox associated email address to work on it together? 

On a side note, have you tried the bad files checker on a different browser than you initially used (merely to exclude browser specific issues)?

Indeed, you may connect to my dropbox email to try to solve this. I have tried not only a different browser but also computer to check for bad files- same hanging issue. I will also try a full delete & reinstall. With the system integrety protection (SIP) on in Mojave, do the sudo commands still delete the necessary files?

I'll have to admit this one seems odd indeed as my initial track of thought was that your browser was acting up. 

Could it be that you have some illegal characters within a large amount of your file/folder names (perhaps the original erroneous rename action was taken on a folder, making your file-paths change)? If your browser is trying to load a large number of results when running the bad files check tool, it could be timing out, thus giving you the error shown in your screenshot.

For a full list of the characters (letters, symbols, or numbers) that may be incompatible with the operating system on your computer you can check this Help Center article:

You could navigate to your files on our website and double check for any of those - just to be sure. 

In addition, I'm not aware of any issues with SIP so this should work normally. The sudo commands during the advanced re-install process that is.

In any case though, I just sent you a brief email so we can work on it together internally.

My mother's iMac had this same issue.  Despite being less than a year old, it was practically unusable for the last 2-3 months.  Sorry Dropbox, but putting the onus on an 84 year old to troubleshoot the problem with your kind assistance is not the solution.  You need to fix your software!!!!!

After an initial plea to Dropbox support, which returned a ridiculous reply that tried to blame it on "too many files" I finally went for the truly simple solution.  I cancelled her Dropbox plan and switched her to iCloud at 1/3 the price.  I removed the Dropbox application and its associated Library cache files (this was important...the computer was still slow after trashing the app).  Her computer now runs beautifully and her photos and other records had no trouble uploading to iCloud.

It might be my imagination but most of the complaints about Dropbox software issues seem to be centered on iMacs.  My Macbook Pro and office Mac mini run it just fine.
