My mobile app will only open a locked file with Adobe Reader

Explorer | Level 3

I always simply opened files in dropbox on my iphone in the app for ios.  Now it suddenly insists that I open a locked file with Acrobat.  This is not a pdf file and I do not want an automatic connection with Acrobat but I don't know how else to open the file.

How do I proceed so I retain files on drop box and am able to select what I want to open a file with?  For example an excel file.

Thanks for the additional information, @Les300

You should be able to preview the file from the Dropbox mobile app, but if you want to open it on your device, you'll have to have a third party app available that supports the file type.

Let me know if you have any other issues after installing the relevant app and I'll make sure to get back to you as soon as possible. Cheers!

Hi there @Les300, I’d be more than happy to help look into this with you.

I’ll just need a few more details to make sure I have a better understanding of what you’re seeing. For example:
  • Does this occur with a specific file or a certain file type?
  • Do you get a similar experience with any other files?
  • Could you send me a screenshot (without any personal information) of the prompt?
Any additional information would be very helpful. Thanks!

It is a file on drop box that is a pdf file.  It used to open automatically when I entered the password but it now insists that I install (and also link) to Adobe Acrobat Reader.  A similar issue occurs with an Excel file.  I am really not wanting to work on these files with others in drop box but only open them for my own use.  It seems as if I do not install and link the apps those files will no longer open on drop box on my iphone.  I have no problem on my mac desktop.

Thank you.  I've got xcel and adobe on my phone--you've helped.  What seems to now occur is that I cannot preview the password-protected documents that are PDF or xls files even if I enter my password UNTIL Excel or Acrobat is activated either automatically or as needed.  Then I can enter my password and it opens.  Thank you..
