Offline files don’t open in their app (eg word) on my iPad

New member | Level 2
New member | Level 2

Hi

ive just purchased an iPad. I have a few files saved offline. They're downloaded (green arrow, not yellow exclamation mark). If I have wifi, I can open the file in its app (eg Word). If no wifi, this option isn't there. I can only open a copy.

i thought offline meant I could access my files, and not have to open a copy. I was using my husband's iPad previously and it worked offline.

Hi @Jill123! Happy to assist with your first Community question.

Let's go through different syncing icons next to your offline files and what they mean:

Green icon
Your offline files are up to date.

Blue syncing icon
Your files are currently downloading to your device.

Yellow exclamation point icon
There is a newer version of your folder available. Tapping the refresh icon on iOS or Update all button on Android will sync these changes.

Red “X” icon

  • Your device has less than 500 MB available.
  • The folder contains more than 10,000 files.
  • The folder contains more than 10 GB.

What happens when you try to open Word files? Are you getting an error? If you are, a screenshot would be avery helpful for me.

Do you have Word installed on your iPad device?

Thanks!

Thanks

To clarify - green icon. (I know it's currently showing blue circle, but that's because I'm downloading stuff. This happens also when everything is up to date).

I have Word.

When I click on the file, I get the preview pane. If I have access to wifi, I get the option bottom right (looks like a weird capital i). This isn't available when I'm offline - sometimes. I have a feeling that sometimes it will be available. 79288F95-F1B6-4721-9276-B4D8CF84D70B.png

Currently offline, but the icon is still there.

Went back offline, closed Dropbox, reopened. Option to open in Word is no longer there. I can open a copy though.

I see. Let's try reinstalling the Dropbox mobile app, also please let me know how much storage you have available on this device and if the issue is only with Word offline files or any other file type.

Thank you for troubleshooting with me. Hope reinstalling helps.

So far so good. I'll try over the next few days to see if it's stable. Fingers crossed and thanks again.
