Everytime I reboot I get the error about dropbox not being able to start due to a permissions problem. I've tried the trick outlibne here about holding down the option key but I suspect that was for an either version. Here's the text:

Thanks for the attempt but it did not work. Deleted .dropbox.cache and .dropbox with that command but upon reboot, the error message still comes up.

🤔 Hmm... Strange! Maybe there are some other restrictions set. Can you try do by hand exactly the same what Dropbox application tries to (and fails to), using following:
xattr -w com.dropbox.ignored 1 /Users/don/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache
Is the above command passing without error?
Thanks for your help. I looked at my history and see that I mistyped the rm command (rd did not return an error, go figure). I am betting that your original solution would have worked. What I did find though was not an OS permission problem. Rather, I use Bitdefender for AV. They have a ransomware protection feature where an app needs to be whitelisted. I never whitelisted Dropbox.
Can someone help me please. I've been using Dropbox for over 10 years. Today I logged on and got:
"Couldn't start Dropbox. This is usually because of a permissions error. Storing you home folder on a network share can also cause an error."
Dropbox is not in my task bar and nothing is hidden.
Many thanks 🙂
