Hello,
I already own the free version of dropbox and I would like to upgrade to a family plan, the problem is that I have some shared folders with other people that won't be in the family plan, so what I would like to know is if I upgrade to a family plan would I only be able to share folders with the people in the plan or would I be able to share with other people too? If I can only share files with my family what would happen to the folders I have already shared with other people?
Thanks in advance.

No you can still share with others. The only thing that changes is you get to manage other people in your family to have larger quotas 🙂
