Quicker way to sync huge files on Mac

Quicker way to sync huge files on Mac

Helpful | Level 5

Hi all!

I use Dropbox to store many things and it works well.  However, I edit large video files (I do online courses) and use Dropbox as a backup for these.  These files can be several gigabytes in size and it takes ages to upload from my MacBook Pro (where I edit) and to pull them down to my Mac Air.

I want to keep storing them on the cloud but wonder if there's a quicker way?  If I Airdrop the exact same files from my MacBook Pro to my Mac Air, would this be enough to signal to dropbox that "it's sync'd, don't do anything more" or would it somehow cause bad things to happen with their sync process?

Does anyone know please?

Thanks!

Matt

Hi Jane,

Thanks - I didn't realise that was an option so good to know!

The upload took forever, but the syn to the other machine was quite quick when I had Enable LAN Sync checked.  Thanks again!

Cheers,

Matt

Hey @mattspeake, I’d happily advise!

Generally speaking, you could improve your syncing speed by adjusting your bandwidth within your Dropbox settings.

I wouldn’t recommend Airdropping as a way to speed things up, since you’d have to approve the incoming files & the devices would have to be placed relatively close. As an alternative, I’d suggest using LAN sync if you’re working on both Macs on the same network.

I hope that that’s the answer you’ve been looking for; let me know how you get on!
