Recent Updates Lost

New member | Level 2

I recently cleared the hardrive on my computer, starting from scratch. When I went to continue work in dropbox, I noticed all my recent edits had been lost. Edits are only there from a couple months ago. This is true both on my new destop version and online. When I go to "devices" I see the previous version of my computer as having made edits when I remember having made them (a couple weeks ago) so clearly some activity made it into the system, but the files are gone. What happened and what can I do to recover my files? I had been working on the desktop app.

Many thanks,

Emily

Hi @emnem16; welcome to our Community!

It sounds like the desktop app wasn't syncing your changes as expected, Emily.

Do you remember if the app in your system tray/menu bar was indeed syncing your changes? Did it report to be 'up to date' after your edits?

While we're at it, could you also take a look at your events page? This is the place where all uploads, edits and deletions are normally logged so it should give you a clue.

Keep me posted on your findings.

I do not know if the files had synced properly, I didn't think to check as I've never had issues, but I have no reason to believe they would be behaving any differently than usual at that time. I checked the events page and none of my activity from the time in question is logged. Just this trace record under devices:Screen Shot 2020-10-14 at 12.44.55 AM.png

If you don't see any relevant activity in your events page, then, those edits never made it to our servers, Emily.

This means that the app on your computer wasn't syncing normally at the time those changes took place.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but I hope this clears things up a tad.

Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to ask.
