Selective Sync Issue - a checked folder won't sync to my local Dropbox folder. Any ideas?

Selective Sync Issue - a checked folder won't sync to my local Dropbox folder. Any ideas?

Hello!

I have a folder that I can access in DropBox online and in the DropBox for S-Mode app, but I cannot access it in the regular DropBox app or in File Explorer.  This folder has been shared with me from a coworker.  I've gone under preferences to Selective Sync and have unchecked the box for the folder, hit Apply, and the re-checked the box for the folder any hit Apply again.  No luck.  I've restarted my computer, restarted DropBox, uninstalled and reinstalled DropBox on my PC.  Not sure what else to try.  I have a poor internet connection and would like to have easy offline access to this folder via File Explorer.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Kyle

Thanks for that @kyleams!

It seems we might have found the culprit there.

For Windows OS, a space or a period (.) at the end of a file or folder name is considered an incompatible character.

Can you try removing this and see if the folder syncs locally?

Hi there @kyleams, I hope you're having a good day so far!

Is it possible that the folder contains any characters that are incompatible for the Windows OS? You can see a list of these characters from here.

If not, can you let me know what sync status the desktop app is currently showing?

Let me know what you find!

Hi Daphne,

Thanks for reaching out.  The folder I am having trouble with is a shared folder and had an incompatible character in the folder name.  I removed the incompatible character and still had no luck.  I then uninstalled DropBox and DropBox for S Mode and then reinstalled the DropBox app on my Windows 10 PC.  It lists the folder name when I go under selective sync, but it still does not sync the folder.  I can access the folder on Dropbox.com and in Dropbox for S Mode, but not in File Explorer or in the app.  My sync status is "up to date".

Thanks for helping out.

Kyle

Thanks for getting back to me here @kyleams!

Can you let me know which version of the desktop app you have installed on your computer? You can check this by hovering over the Dropbox icon in your system tray.

Also, could you check the following location and let me know if you see any issue reported there?

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your system tray.
  2. Click the profile pic/initials icon in the top right of the window.
  3. Choose "View sync issues"

Keep me posted!

Hi Daphne,

It is version 107.4.443.  Under Sync Issues it states "no errors".

Thanks,

Kyle

Hmmm, I see.

Would you mind just sending me a screenshot of the folder in the selective sync settings, to see if there's anything strange looking there, @kyleams?
