Shared links fail when files are edited and saved (Desktop app installed)

New member | Level 2

I'm sure this must be a widespread problem but couldn't find anything about it here - apologies if I missed something!

I've had frustrations recently sharing an Office document via Dropbox with other people - and giving them the Dropbox link so they can access it.  Each time it's edited and saved, the link stops working.

I believe this is because we all have the desktop app installed, so we're actually downloading and opening a local copy, then when we save it syncs back to Dropbox, which then seems to think it's a new file and the links break and everyone gets 404 errors.  (Leaving aside the conflicting files issue if 2 people edit and save in parallel!)

The workaround seems to be either to tell people the file location instead of sharing Dropbox links; or, ensure everyone just accesses the file and updates it via the web, not from their desktop.

However, is there any way to stop the links breaking if the same file is being updated (and the file name isn't changing)?  Other than uninstalling the Dropbox app?!  Or is this just a "feature" we have to live with?

Thanks!

Hi @catchwater, thanks for messaging today!

Generally, when a file is edited, the file should be overwritten, which would keep the shared link intact.

However, it sounds like the file is being deleted, and then added again, which breaks the shared link. Is it possible there was a recent OS or Office update after which these issues occurred?

Keep me posted!
