Simultaneous editing

Explorer | Level 3

I have a business account and is there a way to prevent someone from simultaneoulsly editing a file?  I know with shared drives, a copy is created when a newer version is trying to be saved.

I also saw the new Dropbox badge icon, but is there a way that prevents another user from editing a file when I am editing it or is there just a notification that a newer version is available?  I searched the help documents but they were a bit dated on this subject.  Thanks!

No. The badge needs to be installed on to the device for it to work. The badge doesnt work via the website.

Being honest I'm not sure what happens but I believe the person using the desktop software would be informed somebody else had opened it and it would save as a conflicted copy. It is maybe something you should test for yourself.

The Badge is the only way I'm afraid.

The key difference to remember is that with a Shared Drive there is only 1 copy of the file - the one on the drive. With Dropbox there are multiple copies (at least one per user within the Share).

Hmm, what happens when one person opens the document using the desktop app and other using the browser? Will both people still be able to save the document under the same name?

Will the Dropbox badge still show on both instances of the document even when they were opened in two different methods?
