Hi again to all, I’m merely pinging you back as I’m following this discussion since the very beginning & I’d like to confirm that this issue is actively tracked at the moment.

@bmallon wrote:
This is not a SOLUTION it’s a EXPLANATION of how Dropbox deeply understands this issues but has YET TO OFFER A SOLUTION.
Kindly note that Rua’s accepted Solution aims to keep everyone updated on progress, provide some useful insight on suggested next steps (i.e. one that will help you determine which files are indeed using up your hard disk space) & re-assure you that this is something that we’re looking into at the moment. Quotting from the previous post: I hope you can appreciate that making any changes to how Smart Sync works needs careful consideration, but rest assured we are looking into ways to improve this experience for our Mac users and will let you know as soon as we have an update.” That said, it would be worth noting that they’re the highest level of support, so all replies posted on this conversation end up directly on our team expert’s inbox moving forward thus denoting that this hasn’t been neglected at all.

Now, since we’re also collecting all relevant reports through our Official Support channel, I ran a search on my end @Adam16 & I could see that your open ticket has reached a specialized colleague’s inbox. I’ve included a brief note of your comments mentioning that you need further assistance & I’ve increased your support priority internally.

When it comes to your inquiry @Ian R.5 regarding your Mac running El Capitain, we advised Apple of this issue and they have since remedied it for subsequent OS versions, from macOS 10.12 and onward, however this fix is not backwards compatible so it doesn't apply to your current OS version. Nonetheless, I can see that you’re currently discussing your options with my colleague through our Official Support channel; rest assured that you're in safe hands & please ping them back there in case you need further assistance.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I could do to help on my end & I’ll do my best to follow-up with you soon!

What happens under smart-sync when a backup-program or an A/V-program accesses the file?

This is not a solution. I wiped the hard drives and reinstalled MacOS on 3 different iMacs. Upon installing Dropbox, all files showing with a grey cloud, the space they take on the hard drive is reflected immediately.

What is “taking the most space on the hard drive” is the files on Dropbox.

Almost a year later and still no solution or honest answer as to your technology doesn’t work.

Hey @Trinity C.1, while this is a slightly different inquiry than what we’ve been discussing here, I believe that the info you’re looking for is located on this resource.

From there @diLyon G., I’m merely pinging you back as I can see that you’ve worked on that very closely with our team specialists; your ongoing cooperation & contributions has been mostly appreciated during our investigation. I understand that this is important to you & I'll make sure to circle back to you once I have an update to share!

Thank you for your response.  Working with your tech team to resolve the problem did NOT yield any solutions.  I have managed to free up some space by removing everything that is not in Dropbox  that I can do the OS upgrade and see if that yields any progress.  I still have my Mac OS telling me I have 900GB of files on a 500GB physical hard drive of which 95% of the space is occupied by Dropbox.  If that fails I will be removing Dropbox as the only viable solution to continue using my MacBookPro.

I understand @Ian R.5, please take your time to get going with the OS upgrade! Just on a brief sidenote, it would be worth mentioning that both discussions are currently active, however, if you don’t have the time to upgrade your Mac at the moment, then your existing ticket will be closed on our system due to inactivity.

Should you need any additional assistance Ian, please either reply to your ticket (i.e. even if that’s closed on our system, it will trigger a new ticket creation) or ping me back here & I’ll get back in touch with you on my end.

Thanks again; I’m positive we can get this sorted soon!

I'm having the same problem. The files are obviously not on the HDD but my Mac thinks they are.

I started my subscription yesterday because of the smart sync, please make it work.

Hi Jane, I have done the OS upgrade but no improvement has occured in the last 24 hours (apart from taking up some more disc space for the OS).  I can limp along a little longer but if I can't get a solution I will have no alternative than to "drop" Dropbox.

I'd keep the ticket open as I know others with MacBookPro who have opted out of Dropbox  for this reason - disc space became unmanageable and neither SmartSync or Selective Sync  frees up space unlike we are told by Dropbox.

Smart Sync - Solution - How to see the REAL space

Explorer | Level 4

Hello,

I've been in the same situation than Everyone here. OSX mixes up physical and logical space so you can't really know which space is left when using the Smart Sync function on OSX.

The solution is too use a free tool called Disk Inventory X

http://www.derlien.com

This tools calculates the true space on your disk.

1. Run it, it will ask which volume to analyze, with the real capacity (466gb)Capture d’écran 2019-06-03 à 09.32.01.png

2. Open the volume, analyze, and then you have this. 290gb are taken on my system, so 176gb are available.

3. My 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 folders are Smart-Synced (only available online). And their true size are displayed. On the contrary, 2017, 2018, and 2019 are not smart-synced : their true size (physical) are also displayed.

4. That's it, you have your true physical space.
