Thought I'd post here as well as send a message to Dropbox Inc.
I use a Macbook excel online with Dropbox to work from, just below the tabs is a white space and in the top left corner I'm getting these symbles ; ) ; I've been managing OK but they are taking up screen space and cutting off part of the lower document. This is a new thing for the last 1-2 months. Running Safari 13.1.1 I'm also getting the same in latest Chrome.
As they appear in this doc is it something I've inputed somewhere? Can't see how to delete it, would be great to get rid of the analytics warning too!!
Hi @Distropix; thanks for posting on our Community and happy Monday!
A screenshot of what you see would be great, but can you first clear your browser's cache and let me know if you're still getting the same results?
While we're at it, are you noticing this on a specific file of yours or does it happen for other Excel files too?
Let me know what you find and we'll take it from there.
Good morning and Happy Monday(s) who remembers them?
OK so it happens:
1. On all Excel docs.
2. Happens on Safari and Chrome.
3. Happens when browsers cache cleared.
4. Happens in private browser window/incognito mode
Screen shot attached. ; !!
Well, since we've been gone through a lot lately on a global level, it never hurts to stay positive I guess.
That said, I wanted to thanks for the additional information @Distropix; it sure helps a lot.
At this point, since you've done all the basic troubleshooting (I guess when you tried the incognito modes there wasn't any plugin or extension that could be interfering; right?), may I have you disconnect the app from your account's connected app's tab and then try re-connecting? Maybe that will do the trick.
If this doesn't improve matters, please send me a shared link to a sample file giving you this issue so I can have a look on my end too.
Thanks for your cooperation!
Hi Walter and community
Many thanks for your reply.
I couldn't see how to DM you so here is a link to a newly created spreadsheet https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/96jq9z9gun92jj6zcxfd9/Workbook1.xlsx?cloud_editor=excel&dl=0&rlkey=qg...
I don't see the semi colon bracket semi colon when viewing on Google Sheets but it is there with Excel online.
I don't believe I have any plug ins with the laptop.
I've disconnected from Google - only one on the list connected.
I've deleted all cookies, cleared history, reset laptop - several times - still get the same issue.
I appreciate your help if you can think of anything else let me know.
Dropbox Support has come back a few times to say they're passing this on to another memeber of the team that specilises in this issue etc but nothing back as yet.
Lastly I've asked a collegue to create and save a doc to Dropbox, her's is OK online Excel but if I open it and get the warning and semi colon etc.
Thanks for keeping me in the loop @Distropix!
Truth be told, I couldn't notice the same when accessing the test file you linked to, be it locally or via our website.
Can you check that your browsers are updated to the latest stable version?
Also, could you let me know your device's OS and if there might be an antivirus, a firewall or even a VPN/proxy setting on your computer that might be causing this?
Let me know what you find!
I have exactly the same issue as @Distropix! Have used dropbox for a long time, this message showed up a couple of months or so back.
I am hoping a solution is on the way as it is very frustrating losing so much of the screen to this message.
Well that's a bit of good news in some respects, I'm not alone!
I got fed up with not hearing back from support and messaged a few times, work has gotten busy and I'm just living with it rather than following up. Having broken my arm recently keyboard work is a lot slower!
I got the following from support, I'll carry on with them as seems like they just want a screen shot
Thanks for contacting Dropbox Support! My name is Iliana, and I am an Account Specialist. Sorry about the long wait for resolution. I will be assisting you further with this matter.
I understand you are seeing strange characters ( ; )at the top of the page when you are opening your Excel sheet. Thanks for including that screenshot and the link to the file. In order to troubleshoot further, I will ask a few more questions to help pinpoint the cause of this issue.
Is it possible to get a full page screenshot where you see this? We have had a few engineers try the file and we were unable to see this appear on our pages. Getting this full screenshot will also allow us to see the full message you are seeing below.
Does this happen on every file, or just this one? If you open another Excel file, you can see that the top of the page should look like.
I saw you mention IE in your first message. Is Internet Explorer the only browser you use? Can you try another browser to see if you have different results? (I recommend trying Google Chrome browser)
With this information, I will be able to help you get to a resolution.
Looking forward to assisting you further!
Hi, I've just started having this exact same problem on my Macbook Air in Dropbox when opening an excel spreadsheet in Excel For The Web. Did you get a solution in the end? It's so annoying because now with the space at the top I can't see any of the sheet tabs at the bottom. Argh.
