Unable to open files I get a EIO error

Explorer | Level 4

Hi

recently my mac crashed and I had to reinstall High Sierra, which meant having to reinstall a lot of software, including Dropbox.

But since I have reinstalled everything almost every file I try to open that is on Dropbox. I get this error

EIO: i/o error, open '/users/name/Dropbox/Main/folder-name/sub-folder name/wp-content/themes/2019/template/content/content.php'

This happens on almost all files within my Dropbox folder.  Which is where i store all my files etc.

Something new which I didn't have on previous install, or maybe I did but just didn't know about, is a DropBox provided software/APP?  not sure what it is but when I click on it my Dropbox folders appear see here: https://www.screencast.com/t/a7dnlhc6sCU . when I use this to open files it seems to work?

Do i have to use this now?

Hi @Rob W.16 - welcome to the Community!

From what I gather you must be referring to the new Dropbox desktop experience. This is an organized place where you can bring traditional files, cloud content, Dropbox Paper docs, and web shortcuts together—and work the way that works for you.

As per the error you get now, could you forward me a screenshot so I can have a visual too?

While we're at it, can you let me know if your desktop app is reporting to be 'Up to date' (or still syncing) within your computer's menu bar

Let me know what you find and we'll take it from there Rob!

So I go to my Dropbox folder and I try to open a Excel file, see here: https://www.screencast.com/t/iLCFm3abX

I go to my Dropbox folder and try and open a PHP file: https://www.screencast.com/t/xsILpeNVlo I get the Error I mentioned and a pop out error, saying something about 'Smart Sync'!!

The same with a Word document: https://www.screencast.com/t/dCIK7JyXHd

And yes there is now some new 'Desktop Experience' see here:  https://www.screencast.com/t/87GlKNoZ - Now I have tried this it seems to a replacement for my Desktop 'Dropbox folder' ? I am only guessing

And my DropBox is says it is syncing, but I think that is a big file I uploaded last night see here: https://www.screencast.com/t/k3pqzSrTn7

As it was sync'd before hand

Thanks for the update and the additional details on this @Rob W.16!

Can you tell me if your app is now showing 'Up to date' which would mean you're fully synced?

While at it, I couldn't help but notice that the files within your Dropbox Folder don't show any syncing icon. Can you control click on any of those (shown in your screenshot) and let me know what options you get in the context menu?

A thing you could try here is fixing the permissions and/or hardlinks via our desktop app.

Here are the steps:

1) Make sure the Dropbox desktop application is running

2) Click on the Dropbox icon in your menu bar and then click on the gear in the Notifications panel

3) Select 'Preferences'

4) Click on the 'Account' tab

5) Hold down the 'Option/Alt' key

6) Click on the 'Fix Permissions' button (make sure you're still holding down the 'Option/Alt' key)

7) You may be prompted for your a username and password, this is your computer login credentials, not your Dropbox account ones.

Let me know how it goes Rob!
