Uninstalling Dropbox on Mac

Uninstalling Dropbox on Mac

Explorer | Level 3

Hey all,

I’m currently trying to uninstall Dropbox in my Mac. Online I was told to open the Dropbox icon, click on my profile initials, hit preferences>account>unlink drop box. Then I was told to hit my profile and click “quit Dropbox.” All of these steps allowed me to log out of drop box, however now all of my files on my Mac are still in Dropbox folders. For example, I can’t just click “downloads” or “desktop” and see all my files, instead it takes me to downloads>files in Dropbox> then I see all my files. How can I disconnect all my files from Dropbox?? I would like to unlink my drop box completely since it was full within the first moment I downloaded it. I appreciate the help!!

Hi there @Gaiamieren, let's see what we can do on this together.

It sounds like you had the computer backup feature enabled, which backs up computer folders (like Documents, Downloads, and Desktop) to your Dropbox folder.

For this reason, you'll have to sign back in to your account, turn the feature off, move the files back to their original locations, and then uninstall the desktop app.

Let me know how it goes, cheers!

Thank you for your help! I originally deleted the app, so I redownloaded it. I am unsure of how to go about turning this feature off. Can you please guide me through the app to turn off this feature?

Thanks,

Gaia

Thanks for getting back to me, @Gaiamieren

You can find the relevant steps to turning off the feature here, under the section titled "Turn off computer backup".

Let me know of any updates, cheers!

@Lusil Thank you for the info. I'm trying to follow the steps. If you see the link you sent me it says to click "manage backup" in the backups tab, however, this option does not exist for me. Is there an alternative? I am simply trying to restore my mac to how it was before...can I speak on the phone with someone?

Hi @Gaiamieren, currently, we only provide incoming phone support for team admins of Dropbox Business subscriptions.

If you're not seeing that option in the Dropbox desktop application, what options do you see there? Could you attach a screenshot of this, while hiding any personal info?
