What is the ".dropbox" file in my local Dropbox folder?

New member | Level 2

I have a new file in my dropbox root folder (Windows 10) called ".dropbox" (that is the full name including file extension).

It is not the hidden ".dropbox.cache" file (that is also there but is hidden).

And I do not have hidden files showing.

Can I delete this?

Hey @detstru, thanks for reaching out to us here!

The ".dropbox" file is something that the app uses to store certain information about your folders and shared folders. You can check out some more info on this here.

This should be hidden though. If you don't have the option on to show hidden files, then you can hide this manually by right clicking the file, choosing "Properties" and choosing the hide the file from there.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
