Why do I need to upgade my storage to access a large shared folder created on someone else' account?

A fellow photographer attempted to grant me access to his large folder (4GB) but I was unable to add it or access it since I only have a basic account. What is the purpose of that? I'm not going to join a service I don't regualry use just to add a few files to a shared folder. Is there any solution to this other than subscribing?

Get the person to send you a shared link instead that you can use to download via the web: www.dropbox.com/links
