Why does my account online say I'm using more space than the files synced to my desktop?

New member | Level 2

When i login to Dropbox homepage it claims i have 515,5 gb of files but when i download everything through the program dropbox (with local storage, not online) it only takes up 334 GB. Why is that? Anyone knows?

And i do not have any shared files..

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Dropbox Community @Ringback123123!

That's a rather large difference you're seeing there, do you maybe have some folders selectively synced ? If you check the selective sync settings in the desktop app preferences, are all of your folders checked?

Another thing to check would be for any "bad characters" that your OS may not be able to sync. There is a full list of characters that can prevent items from syncing in this article here, a large folder with one of these characters in the name could also explain the difference you see.

Let me know what you find and we can go from there - thanks!
